Literacy Lessons

Activity 1: Goals Letters
  • Students will establish a letter to themselves about what they would like to accomplish during the course of their academic year.

Activity 2: Bio Poems
  • Each student will write a short (guided) poem about themselves. They will then draw an image of themselves to accompany the poem.

Activity 3: Developing Writer's Notebooks
  • Students will begin to set up their Writer's Notebooks by writing about their feelings on the first day of school.

Activity 4: Decorating Writer's Notebooks
  • Students will bring in pictures from home to decorate the outside of their Writer's Notebooks. These pictures will be later used as writing prompts.

Activity 5: Writing Excursions
  • Writing excursions are to introduce formal writing (established paragraphs). The teacher will assign certain topics to establish an initial guideline for students to develop writing structure.

Activity 6: What If's/Fierce Wonderings Assignment
  • Students will compile a list of questions that they are wondering about or have always wondered about. From there they will individually write about those questions within their Writer's Notebook.
